Giving Birth at WellStar Atlanta Medical Center: An Insider's Guide

If you are planning a low-intervention, un-medicated birth chances are you’ve looking into one of the many practices who deliver at Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center.  Located in the middle of midtown Atlanta, WellStar AMC is very easy to get to because of it’s proximity to I-75/I-85.

Parking/Admission

Labor and Delivery is located on the 7th floor of the main hospital building. Park in the parking deck and enter through main hospital entrance during daytime hours, or through the Emergency Room after hours. There is a large waiting room with vending machines and bathrooms located directly outside of the elevators. From there you take the elevator up to the 7th floor and follow the signs to L&D. You need to be buzzed back through the double doors.

Food/Drinks

One of the best things about WellStar Atlanta is that they do not restrict eating and drinking during labor.  Women are encouraged to stay hydrated and to eat small bites of food through their labor.  The 340 building next to the main hospital has a Chick-Fil-A, Blimpie, and Starbucks and there are also many different restaurants within a few mile radius.

General Info

Water Births! Atlanta Medical is one of the few locations in metro Atlanta that allows women to both labor and deliver in the water.  In order to qualify for a water birth you must be a low risk patient and participate in an online or in person water birth class. It is important that you show your nurse your water birth certificate on admittance to the hospital so that you are assigned to a large enough room. Also offered are large showers for hydro-therapy during your labor.

IV/HepLock is not required as long as you are GBS negative, not being induced/augmented, and are not receiving any type of IV narcotic or epidural.

Intermittent fetal monitoring is also standard as long as your birth remains low risk and you are not being induced/augmented or receiving any type of IV narcotic or epidural.

Rooming in is standard for baby and mom during the entirety of the hospital stay.
